Certain projects, often in Glasgow buildings of a certain age or with historical or design importance, require the input of tradesmen with exceptional skills.
Under the aegis of Historic Scotland, in 2008 Adelphi carried out the restoration of the Minton Tiled main stair hall floor at the ‘A’-listed Glasgow Garnethill Synagogue. Originally laid in the early 1870s, damage to the substrate over the decades had caused substantial movement and subsidence in the large sections [not sure of sense here] of the floor. Using modern technology to lay a fully durable replacement substrate, we then used traditional methods to painstakingly re-lay the patterned Star of David mosaic flooring. All tiles that could be salvaged were saved and re-used, while the matching replacement tiles were manufactured in Stoke-on-Trent specifically for the project. The results can be viewed by the public every year at the Glasgow Doors Open Day.
Other Adelphi projects that can be inspected more regularly are the repaired entrance hall floor and dining room entrance at Holmwood House, Cathcart, Glasgow. This gem by Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson is a National Trust property and as such is open from 1 April to 31 October every year. Individual repairs have also been carried out at another National trust property – Pollock House, south Glasgow.
